Have you ever wondered what it takes to write a play?  Playwriting is part craft and part formula, and in this class you'll learn to utilize both, whether you're a first time playwright or are looking to develop your skills. Each class has three components, along with some take-home writing prompts and assignments to help you begin generating scripts. First, a lecture will walk you through core aspects of playwriting, including plot development, characterization, and script structure. Next, a discussion allows the entire class to process the concepts learned and to ask questions about how to implement them. Finally, each class has a workshop section where participants will give and provide feedback to each other's scripts in small groups, utilizing the feedback techniques taught in the course. Once you've completed this five week class, you'll be able to use what you've learned to create or revise your own original script for the stage!

Meet the Instructor:

Fr. Kyle Kowalczyk is a playwright trained at the University of Utah and through Act One: Writing for Hollywood. His passion for writing plays began in high school with a self-produced collection of short comedies and has continued through college, seminary, and into his priesthood today.

Fr. Kyle has written 10 plays, musicals, and one-acts that have been produced on stage—including Saved by the Guillotine, Murder and Mariolatry, and Moonshot: A Statistically Insignificant Musical—alongside many other unproduced works. He brings years of practical stage-writing experience, humor, and craft to help writers bring their own stories to light.
