Missed the Boat Theatre Workshop

So many people’s theatre experience is a competitive, cutthroat, toxic environment that leave actors burned instead working to create something beautiful. That is something Missed the Boat Theatre actively works to solve.

We are a community of people who desire to showcase what is true, good, and beautiful, starting with our relationships with each other. Our message will be clearer if we live it out in every part of the play process.

During our first two weeks of rehearsal, our production team, cast, and crew got to know each other and discussed the core of what Sense and Sensibility is about.

Mary Shaffer, Director, conducted a series of talks that touched on the core of being Catholic and how we interact with the world around us. She explored themes of the will versus the passions, people’s different ideas of discernment, dealing with grief, and much more. This created a lens for the entire team to look at for relating to certain characters, approaching our role in the show, and being more in touch with our life in general.

Christina Malloy, Assistant Director, then walked everyone through a variety of acting exercises to create a holistic approach in expressing oneself and how that translates into acting. These exercises pushed everyone to act without overthinking, make natural connections with objects nearby, react instinctually to others, and get out of the comfort zone.

This two week workshop flowed into what is now rehearsal. We continue to cultivate community by starting Monday rehearsal with Mass and dinner all together before we do any other work.

We are working hard to bring Sense and Sensibility to life and are so excited to create this story for you to enjoy!
