Musical Theatre Dance: Embracing the Spotlight
A six-session dance course taught by Mary Mailand Schlichting
Tuesdays, Sept 24th-Oct 29th
6:30-8:00pm
Collide Theatrical Dance Studio, St. Paul
Registration Fee: $150 ($125 early bird pricing until August 24th!)
In this course we will take an intensive look into different dance techniques, movement vocabularies, and the stage presence that transforms the dancer into a performer. Simply executing movement with precision and grace is found lacking if the actor does not also reach the audience on an emotional level. Students will focus on the development and execution of various dance styles and the confidence that is required to take up space on stage. Laid out in a classical structure, we will begin each class with a warm up aimed at movement preparation and body connection, followed by across the floor sequences that will progress in difficulty from week to week. To end we will learn a new combination, blending movement with performance, improving the student's choreography retention. This course is held at the intermediate to advanced level for those with performance experience.
About the Instructor
Mary Mailand Schlichting
Mary is a born and raised Minnesota native. She grew up immersed in the studio dance and competition world and never lost her love of the stage. She completed her BFA at Macalester College in Theater and Dance in 2019, having had the privilege to represent the school at Jacob’s Pillow. Mary has since established herself in the local artistic community as both choreographer and mover with various groups, including Crash Dance Productions, Contempo Physical Dance, Bobby Rethwish, and Missed The Boat Theatre as the company choreographer. Mary seeks to create moments on stage in which the power of athleticism and the softness of artistry perfectly blend together in a single movement vocabulary.
